Privacy Policy

Website Privacy Policy

Effective: June 1, 2026

Protect the Basin (“Protect the Basin,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit protectthebasin.org (the “Site”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using the Site, you agree to this Policy.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information in three ways: information you give us, information collected automatically, and information from service providers acting on our behalf.

a. Information You Provide

You may choose to share information with us by:

  • Signing up for email updates (name, email address, and optionally ZIP code);
  • Signing a petition or submitting a contact / advocacy form (name, email address, ZIP code, and any message you choose to include; phone number if you provide it); and
  • Contacting us directly by email.

We do not knowingly collect Social Security numbers, government identifiers, payment card data, or precise geolocation through this Site.

b. Information Collected Automatically

Like most websites, the Site automatically collects certain technical information when you visit, including:

  • IP address and approximate location derived from it;
  • Browser type, device type, and operating system;
  • Pages you view on the Site, the time and duration of your visit, and the website that referred you;
  • Anonymous identifiers stored in cookies and similar technologies.

We use Google Analytics (or a comparable analytics service) to help us understand Site traffic in aggregate. These services may set cookies on your device. See Section 5 below for your choices.

c. Information from Service Providers

Our email and form vendors (for example, our email service provider and form host) process the information you submit on our behalf so we can deliver updates you request and respond to your messages.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above to:

  • Send you email updates, action alerts, and other communications you have requested;
  • Respond to inquiries, petition submissions, and other messages;
  • Advance the public-education, advocacy, and policy work of Protect the Basin, including aggregating petition support to share with elected officials, regulators, and the public;
  • Operate, secure, and improve the Site, including diagnosing technical problems and measuring traffic;
  • Comply with applicable law and respond to lawful requests.

3. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as follows:

  • Service providers. Vendors that host the Site, send our emails, host our forms, and provide analytics may process your information solely on our behalf and under confidentiality obligations.
  • Public advocacy. We may share aggregate counts of petition signers (for example, total number of supporters by state or congressional district) with policymakers, the press, and the public. We may also share individual signatures and the message you included when you sign a petition specifically intended for public submission, where the form clearly states the petition will be delivered to a named recipient. We do not publish your email address or phone number.
  • Affiliates. Protect the Basin is a project supported by Fasken Oil & Ranch and Livlen Media. Information may be shared internally with personnel and contractors working on the campaign on a need-to-know basis.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information when we believe disclosure is required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of the public, our supporters, or our staff.
  • Business transitions. If the campaign is reorganized, merged with another organization, or transferred to a successor, information may be transferred as part of that transition, subject to this Policy.
  •

4. Cookies and Analytics

The Site uses cookies and similar technologies to remember your preferences and to measure how visitors use the Site. Most browsers let you refuse or delete cookies through your settings; doing so may limit some features of the Site. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Some browsers transmit “Do Not Track” signals. Because there is no industry-standard response to these signals, the Site does not currently respond to them.

5. Your Choices

  • Email updates. Every email we send includes an “unsubscribe” link. You may also email us at the address below to be removed from our lists.
  • Petition / form submissions. If you would like us to remove a petition signature or other submission you made, contact us at the address below. Note that information already shared with policymakers or aggregated for public reporting may not be retrievable.
  • Browser controls. You can clear cookies, block cookies, or use private-browsing modes through your browser settings.

6. Texas and Other State Privacy Rights

Depending on the state in which you live, you may have additional rights regarding the personal information we hold about you, such as the right to know what information we have, to request a copy, to request correction or deletion, and to opt out of certain uses. To exercise these rights, contact us using the information below. We will respond consistent with applicable law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

7. Children

The Site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect the information we collect. No method of transmission over the Internet or storage system is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Data Retention

We keep personal information only for as long as is reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including operating the campaign, responding to inquiries, and meeting legal obligations. Email subscribers remain on our list until they unsubscribe. Petition data is retained as long as the underlying campaign remains active and for a reasonable period afterward.

10. Third-Party Links

The Site may link to third-party websites, including news articles, social media platforms, and partner organizations. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to review their policies before providing information.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective” date above and post the updated Policy on the Site. Material changes will be noted at the top of the Site or by email to subscribers where appropriate.

12. Contact Us
