Residents of Andrews County packed into the Andrews County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 to hear from other community members and from the Commissioners Court about the incoming high-level nuclear waste storage site in the county.
Judge Charlie Falcon claimed that he wanted to hear from the community and the Commissioners vocalized that in the past when the resolution had originally been passed by them, they hadn’t asked enough questions from Waste Control Specialists nor from community members.
Judge Falcon says they need more information in order to make a decision. In the last 3 weeks, local voices have clearly shown a loud “NO” in their support. Yet the Judge still needs to hear more, yet at the end of the meeting he did not set a timeline for when a decision would be made.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s license to Interim Storage Partners ( a joint venture of WCS and Orano) is due to be granted in the next few weeks. Andrews County Commissioners Court has yet to make a call.
While it is against the law to have voted yay or nay to the interim storage of high-level nuclear waste in Andrews on Tuesday ( Judge Falcon citing laws that since it isn’t on the agenda no vote could legally take place), two of the Commissioners voiced eager interest in voting on the matter at the next Court meeting.
